Welcome to Saint Joseph Parish

As a community of Baptized Catholics, endowed by God with special gifts and nourished by the Eucharist, we at Saint Joseph Parish recognize our mission to call forth these gifts to help build the Body of Christ.

St. Joseph Parish Vision Statement

We are called as a community of believers to deepen our relationship with Christ. This relationship is fostered through our prayer life, and in our devotion to God’s presence in the sacraments. In serving our Parish community, we seek to give of ourselves, in our presence at Mass, in the sharing of the special gifts we have been given, and through our offerings for our church. We also seek to live out our faith, through our words, through our good actions, and through the graces we receive, as we become the people God has meant us to be, drawing closer to God and those he has put in our lives.

God of power and might, wisdom and justice, through You authority is rightly administered, laws are enacted, and judgment is decreed. Assist with Your spirit of counsel and fortitude the President and other government leaders of these United States. May they always seek the ways of righteousness, justice, and mercy. Grant that they may be enabled by Your powerful protection to lead our Country with honesty and integrity. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

During the month of

the Church remembers her “loved ones” who have been called back to the Lord.

Father, God of all consolation, in Your unending love and mercy for us You turn the darkness of death into the dawn of new life. Through Your Son, Jesus Christ, we ask You to deliver the souls in Purgatory, especially those for whom we now pray... (mention them here) Welcome them into Your presence and bless them with eternal light and peace. Raise them up to live for ever with all Your saints in the glory of the Resurrection. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

News and More...
Giving Tuesday – December 3rd - Support Seminarian Formation
Advent is just beginning and we invite you to start off this season of joyful expectation by joining us to ensure that our future Church has enough priests to serve our parish communities. Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving back celebrated world-wide on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving —December 3rd this year — when people are encouraged to support a worthwhile cause that is special to them. What could be more important than providing our seminarians with the formation and education needed to be our future pastoral and spiritual leaders?

This Giving Tuesday, help us with a gift to the Diocese of Metuchen in support of our seminarians. Go to and help provide for the needs of our seminarians studying for the priesthood. A gift today is a gift to our future Church. Thank you!

Christmas Bazaar
St. Andrew Church, Avenel, will host a Christmas Bazaar on December 7, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., in St. Andrew Church Hall, 244 Avenel Street, Avenel.

Crafts, Basket Raffles, Bake Sale, Great Food, Pictures with Santa!

CHRISTMAS FRIENDSHIP DINNER at St. Anthony of Padua Church, Port Reading
All are welcome to share dinner, with all the trimmings, at St. Anthony of Padua Church, Father Milos Parish Hall, 436 Port Reading Avenue, on Wednesday, December 25, from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. There is NO CHARGE. A call by Wednesday, December 18, would be appreciated to properly plan the meals.

Please call St. Anthony’s Church at 732-634-1419. Leave a message and someone will get back you.

THE GIVING TREE is set-up in the Narthex.
Once again, the Giving Tree Committee is asking for your help for those less fortunate.

Please help those in need by selecting a Gift Tag; or if you prefer, you can donate a Gift Card or make a monetary donation, by using the envelope located under the Giving Tree.

Please place the Gift Tag and unwrapped gift under the Giving Tree no later then December 7. Unfortunately, any child’s gift received after December 7 will not be given to that special child in time for Christmas day. If you selected a Gift Tag but are unable to give the gift, please return the Gift Tag by December 7.

All donated gifts will be given to the children of our Food Pantry clients. For some children these may be the only gifts they receive on Christmas Day.

THANK YOU for opening your hearts.

Have a Happy and Joyous Christmas Season.

Our Diocesan Office for Persons with Disabilities has a 24 hour prayer line for those who desire prayer for special needs.

If you, a family member or friend would like to be remembered in prayer for a temporary or permanent illness, please call and leave a detailed message at 732-765-6431 or email

If you have requested a Mass to be celebrated for your intention and would like to present the gifts that will become the Body and Blood of Christ at that Mass, please inform one of the ushers before Mass; otherwise, they will ask someone from the congregation to present the gifts. Thank you.
Baptism Sponsor and Godparent Guidelines
In accordance with Canon (Church) Law, at least one godparent who is of the Catholic faith, is required at Baptism.

Normally there are two and must be of different genders. The godparent(s) must be at least fourteen (14) years of age and must have received the Sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation.

Each godparent is required to submit a certificate of eligibility from his/her own parish. The certificate must state that the sponsor is a Catholic in good standing, who attends Mass regularly, and, if married, is in a valid marriage recognized by the Catholic Church. An individual married civilly by a judge, or a mayor, or divorced and remarried without an annulment is not eligible to act as a godparent.

In the absence of a second godparent, a non-Catholic Christian (never a former Catholic) may serve as a Christian witness. A copy of his/her baptismal record must be submitted beforehand.

Please help us help you. We are only able to provide you with a sponsor certificate if you are an active, registered member of our Parish, attend Mass regularly, and meet all the guidelines. Please be sure to register if you have not already done so.

Are you registered in St. Joseph Parish? All Catholics should be registered in a Parish so that the Parish may know you and your family and so be able to serve you better.

Registration is your statement that you belong to a particular faith community where you are known, your faith is strengthened, and your relationship with God is nourished and given expression.

When you are registered, actively involved, and a Catholic in good standing, the Parish is able to provide you with testimonial certificates to be a sponsor for Baptism and/or Confirmation. Your registration information is strictly confidential and never in any way becomes a public record.

If you have not already registered in the Parish, please stop by the Parish Office and take the time to do so. Thank you.

Please call the parish office if you are interested in receiving any of the following Sacraments - Baptism, Pastoral Care of the Sick, Matrimony, Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)
